DR. GARY COHN
EVERETT PUBLIC SCHOOLS (WA)
Dr. Gary Cohn was selected as superintendent of Everett Public Schools in 2009. During nine years of his leadership, Everett implemented a district-wide continuous improvement process resulting in significant increases in student achievement and five-year graduation rates and diminished achievement gaps among student groups. Everett led in piloting and implementing the Teacher-Principal Evaluation Program; and has been a leader in integrating Common Core standards-aligned curriculum, 21st century skills, 1:1 student computing, and STEM instruction. The district has embarked upon strategic partnerships with higher education and business to better prepare students for college and careers and to eliminate barriers to enrollment in higher education.
Prior to joining Everett, Dr. Cohn served as superintendent of the Port Angeles School District for eight years. He implemented the district’s strategic plan and reinvention efforts, engaging actively in the community to strengthen collaboration between the district, community, and business. His experience includes service as vice president and interim president at Lake Washington Technical College; while there, he founded a technical high school. Dr. Cohn taught marketing and business education in the Northshore School District and served in leadership positions with the Lake Washington School District. He taught business communications for Eastern Washington University, and previously worked in marketing for an international computer manufacturer.
Community Service: Dr. Cohn has served on the boards of United Way and YMCA of Snohomish County, Snohomish County Health Alliance, and Washington Alliance for Better Schools, and on the Governor's Council for the Healthiest Next Generation at the invitation of Governor Inslee. Gary and his wife Sue served as Co-Chairs for the Tocqueville Society of the United Way. While in Port Angeles, he served on the boards of United Way of Clallam County, Community Multicultural Alliance, Clallam Business Incubator, Peninsula Development Association, Lincoln Center Association, Haller Foundation, K. O. Erickson Trust, and Port Angeles Education Foundation. Gary and Sue served as 2008 Campaign Chairs for the Clallam County United Way. Dr. Cohn served on the Washington Professional Educator Standards Board at the appointment of Governor Gregoire. While in Kirkland, he served as president of the Kirkland Chamber of Commerce and the Eastside Leadership Institute.
Education: Dr. Cohn completed a doctor of philosophy degree from the College of Education at the University of Washington. He earned a master of business administration degree through the Albers School of Business at Seattle University and a bachelor’s degree with majors in economics and business administration from the University of Puget Sound. Dr. Sue Cohn is a retired high school principal, and is currently working on school and district improvement with the state Superintendent of Public Instruction. Sue holds doctorate, master’s, and bachelor’s degrees from the University of Washington.
