Deputy Chief for Innovation & Design

Scott Thompson serves as the Deputy Chief for Innovation and Design in the Office of Instructional Practice with the District of Columbia Public Schools. In this role, Scott leads the design of the district’s new approach to teacher professional development that will launch district-wide in the 2016-17 school year. Scott’s team also manages DCPS’s teacher leadership work, teacher residency program, PD pilots in areas including video feedback and online courses, and partnerships with researchers at Stanford, the University of Virginia, Columbia Business Schools, and the University of Michigan. Scott has been with DCPS since 2009 and spent his first six years leading the district’s teacher effectiveness work in the Office of Human Capital, designing and implementing many of the district’s key teacher quality initiatives, including the IMPACT teacher evaluation system, the LIFT teacher career ladder, the Teacher Leadership Innovation program, the Strategic School Operations initiative, and a number of innovations in teacher recruitment and selection. Scott began this career teaching middle and high school social studies in New York City. He holds a Bachelor of Arts from Stanford University and also studied at Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar, where he received a Masters in Social Policy.
